Wing Tsun vs Martial Arts
An open letter to Martial Arts fans, about the best style.
Wing Tsun Kung Fu is a self defence system, not a system to earn titles and medals, however, even these are required for some people.
Between trainers and students of Martial Arts, sports and the traditional ones, an endless discussion is been held on topic "Who’s Kung-Fu (gun-fu) is better"? It is like the kids in the kindergarden, trying to clarify whos penis is longer... Sorry for such a frankness!
Karateists flout and vilify boxers, boxers in turn flout wrestlers, wrestlers karateists... and so on, even inside Wing Tsun family there are some “smart-guys", who think that Wing Tsun system is the best of all other systems.
If we consider Martial Art's evolution history, we can see that any system or style were created for self-defence, not to compete with other schools or styles(however, I suspect, that even such cases existed), eg to give a chance to the student to withstand against violence. Even todays world is full of discussions - What’s better? What is really better?
The Answer is simple – Human. The style gives you just an opportunity to use your body in complicated situations( in case of an assault or stickup). But the implementation of the style is up to him, "Student – Human“. Imagine the following situation, boxer beats the wrestler.... and then he screams to whole world... boxing – it's a super system. But after a year or two, the same boxer were defeated by the same wrestler. So what? Does boxing as a system become worse during these years? Or is it wrestler, who become better in his skills? The conclusions are up to you to make.
Of course, style is what counts, but it is not conclusional. Style gives to human(to students) an opportunity to open their abilities and provides them with information, but again the implementation of the style is completely up to students and their master along with master’s requirements in classes. So what is it about style? Certainly, styles and schools differ in their techniques and principles, but every style or system follows its specific goals. But this is already another topic for discussion. If I love only SUMO and I’m against all the other styles, then it is the same as being against any variety in the world.... It looks like a wish that only roses should grow on earth.
A teacher who You have encountered on Your way is important, not the style. He is your teacher on your WAY, not just someone who wants to warm up his hands (and amuse his EGO) against Your titles You have won on competitions(by the way, on the street you'll be hit to face not to title)
So, You choose Your WAY – Aikido, Ju Do, Karate, Boxing, Wrestling, Kick Boxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Tae Kwon Do and so on. It's simple - walk Your chosen way, practice, find yourself, think, choose. The question is, do we have to clarify "Who's kung-fu is better?".
After some time You realized, that the style You are practicing currently is not the one that fits with Your needs. There may be a thousand reasons for this. What are You doing? You are leaving. You are leaving to another school, style, to another Teacher. Go ahead, practice, learn, look, compare and make Your conclusions. But do not repeat the nonsense that were told You by Your friends, like "this style is a load of codswallop.. lets go to elsewhere! Where was it taken from? Are you practicing this style or just following these nonsenses that others tell you to do? If you have practiced, then for how long, a month, a year, ten years? No? Then what are we talking about?
What for I wrote all this? I have practiced different Martial Arts during 22 years... and I love and respect all other styles and directions. All of them. These are like flowers, all individually beautiful, but neither of them competes with another with its beauty.
Just do what you like to do!!! All styles and directions – are the leaves of the same tree and the roots of that tree are the same for all Martial Arts.
The idea of any Martial Art - self-realization, however its too deep for some people. For those on the surface – it's an opportunity, a chance to stand against the violence. Even football gives you a nice chance to make a good kicks with you legs.
Our enemies are not the representatives of any Martial Art (sports, traditional), instead, they are the moral bastards who have crossed any moral and humanity rules, and whom we still encounter all the time on our WAY! Though, the most important enemy of ours are we ourselves, our weaknesses and fears. Martial Arts are only showing us the way, how to defeat ourselves, not You the representative of another school or style.
I think, first of all it badly affects the idea of the Martial Arts, to change yourself into method to provement and self-affirmation «who's kung fu is better»? However, even this is required for someone.
With Respect to all Masters of Martial Arts.
